Broodstock Facility in Skálavík
Bakkafrost intends to build a broodstock station in Skálavík. The station will be the first of its kind in the world,
where all stages of the life cycle are on land. The preparation work began in 2020, and the construction is planned to be carried out in stages in the coming years. The broodstock station is designed and dimensioned to process several hundred different QTL families, thereby ensuring the best genetic composition. The range of consultancy provided by SMJ included:
- Project management
- Design of technical and biological support systems
- A comprehensive 3D model
- RAS water purification, including particulate filtering and biological production (MBBR)
- Dimensioning of CO2 degassing, ozone, and O2
- Flow mechanics, including CFD analysis of tank hydraulics
- Power supply, emergency power systems, and SCADA
- Communication with authorities regarding permit approvals
