FÖRKA

Bakkafrost has invested in sustainability and circular economy, constructing the first biogas plant in the Faroe Islands.

In the Faroe Islands, about half of the electricity comes from fossil fuels, and as is the case in most countries around the world, there is a desire for a green transition in waste management, energy, and food production. The new biogas plant contributes to a green shift in agriculture, salmon production, and the production of electricity and heat. This is achieved by extracting energy from organic waste while returning the nutrients to agricultural soil. Bakkafrost won the Business Initiative Award in 2019 for the project.

NIRAS and SMJ Consulting Engineers were consultants on the project, providing advice on tender materials, negotiations, and applications for environmental approvals.
